A new tourism product is attracting locals and foreigners in the district of Boquete, it is the El Cañón del Río Cochea Trail, recently certified as a safe path by SINAPROC.

The trail is located within the Hacienda Los Molinos project, in El Francés, and can take two hours to travel. You must go with a hotel guide or authorized by the ATP, registering before to make the reservation. You can not enter the path alone.

Isabella Gormaz, the hotel manager, confirmed that it has invested in infrastructure and two lookouts, one where the visitor does not necessarily have to go down to take pictures of the canyon and another halfway more immersed in nature.

The trail is already open to visitors, its official opening is scheduled in April when wildlife and flora information is completed for the signaling of the same.

Gormaz informed that at the moment they are working in the fauna and flora survey with a team made up of biologists, bird specialists and certified guides from Boquete.

The hotel, besides working on the tourist quality certification of the Tourism Authority of Panama since November 2016, is one of the three hotels nationwide that has completed a process of certification of hotels prepared on the topic of risk management with the SINAPROC . This included training, training, an adaptation of the area and evacuation routes, among others.

According to Gormaz, the canyon has become a very peculiar natural attraction because it is surrounded by vegetation, contrary to the canons of other parts of the world that are usually arid.

The specialized guide, Plinio Montenegro, explained that El Cañón del Río Cochea is a geological formation of the Barú Volcano – the highest point in Panama – and is located within a rainforest, between the districts of Dolega and Boquete.

On the way to the canyon, you can enjoy two beautiful views. One exactly towards the imposing volcano and another towards the Gulf of Chiriqui, in the Pacific.

In this place there are endemic species of fauna and flora that are not found in other parts of the country, that is, they belong to the highlands. Here you can see migratory species of birds, howler monkeys, cat alone and different types of butterflies, amphibians and reptiles, varieties of trees and plants such as orchids and waterfalls (waterfalls).

To walk the path, the specialist recommended to wear closed shoes, long pants, sunscreen, hat or cap, jacket for rain, repellent, water (1 or 2 liters), walking stick, energy bars, chocolate and have good health and physical condition.

Un nuevo producto turístico está atrayendo a locales y extranjeros en el distrito de Boquete, se trata del Sendero El Cañón del Río Cochea, recientemente certificado como sendero seguro por SINAPROC.

El sendero se localiza dentro del proyecto Hacienda Los Molinos, en El Francés, y puede tomar dos horas recorrerlo. Se debe ir con un guía del hotel o autorizado por la ATP, registrándose antes para hacer la reserva. No se puede ingresar solo al sendero.

Isabella Gormaz, gerente del hotel, confirmó que se ha invertido en infraestructura y dos miradores, uno donde no necesariamente el visitante tiene que bajar para tomarse fotos del cañón y otro a mitad de camino más inmerso en la naturaleza.

El sendero ya está abierto a los visitantes, su inauguración oficial se tiene programada en el mes de abril cuando se complete información de fauna y flora para la señalización del mismo.

Gormaz informó que en estos momentos están trabajando en el levantamiento de fauna y flora con un equipo conformado por biólogos, especialistas en aves y guías certificados de Boquete.

El hotel además de trabajar en la certificación de calidad turística de la Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá desde noviembre de 2016, es uno de los tres hoteles a nivel nacional que cumplió un proceso de certificación de hoteles preparados en tema de gestión de riesgos con el SINAPROC. Esto abarcó entrenamiento, capacitación, adaptación del área y rutas de evacuación, entre otros.

Según Gormaz, el cañón se ha convertido en un atractivo natural muy peculiar por estar rodeado de vegetación, contrario a los cañones de otras partes del mundo que por lo general son áridos.

El guía especializado, Plinio Montenegro, explicó que El Cañón del Río Cochea es una formación geológica del Volcán Barú -el punto más alto de Panamá- y está ubicado dentro de un bosque lluvioso, entre los distritos de Dolega y Boquete.

De camino al cañón se puede disfrutar de dos hermosas vistas. Una exactamente hacia el imponente volcán y otra hacia el Golfo de Chiriquí, en el Pacífico.

En este lugar existen especies endémicas tanto de fauna y flora que no se encuentran en otras partes del país, es decir son propias de tierras altas. Aquí se observan especies migratorias de aves, monos aulladores, gato solo y diferentes tipos de mariposas, anfibios y reptiles, variedades de árboles y plantas como orquídeas y caídas de aguas (cascadas).

Para recorrer el sendero, el especialista recomendó llevar zapatos cerrados, pantalón largo, protección solar, sombrero o gorra, jacket para lluvia, repelente, agua (1 ó 2 litros), bastón para caminar, barras energéticas, chocolate y tener buen estado de salud y condición física.
